Fashion Friday – Bridal Shower Outfits

I centered today’s fashion Friday around a reader’s request that I recently received:

Liz’s request: The outfits you have posted are so cute, but I couldn’t find any of the bridal shower outfits because I think they are too old! I’m trying to find a great outfit for my sister’s bridal shower, it is an april shower and I am the maid of honor– so I need to look good!

I probably am looking to spend $100-150 for the total look.

I am a pear shape, 5? 6?, medium length brown/reddish hair and not super comfortable with really short dresses/skirts. There will also be a lot of middle-aged older women from my parent’s church at the shower– so cute and trendy, but not risqué would be ideal.

Last but not least, the shower is in the Chicago area- so you never know what the temperature will be like. Probably anywhere from 55-70 or so. Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

I put together two different looks. My favorite is the colorful, yellow dress – but I love both of the outfits. With either of these outfits, you could wear them again and again. I hope this helps you out, Liz!

How to Host a Spa Themed Bridal Shower

When you plan a theme for an event, it’s much easier to decide upon the décor, food, beverages, invitations, and more. I always suggest having some sort of theme or color palette for bridal showers to make it easier on the host. Help the bride relax by hosting a spa themed bridal shower. The most inexpensive way to do this is to set up the “spa” in your home.

Invitations

Make sure that your invitations clearly state the theme of the bridal shower. Encourage guests to wear comfortable clothing or bathrobes and slippers or sandals. The invitation should also note what the guests should bring as gifts. Compile a list of spa related items so you’re prepared to give guests suggestions when they ask. Gifts should include a certificate for a back massage, manicure and pedicure set, scented candles, and a cashmere or luxurious bathrobe.

Décor

Let the spa items serve as the décor. You should have a couple scented candles in the main room and possibly a couple small floral displays. If you’re giving favors to the guests, have a separate table for the favors, so they also serve as decorations. Some favor ideas are scented candles, manicure set, nail polish, or lavender sachet.

Spa Stations

Set up a few different spa stations such as a manicure station, pedicure station, and facial station. You could purchase the items yourself or ask each bridesmaid to be responsible for one station. You can find most of these products in your local drugstore.

Food and Beverages

Every bridal shower needs refreshments. Serve the guests water with cucumber, lemon, and lime slices and/or mimosas to celebrate the bride. You could serve healthy options for food or you could serve a cheese display, vegetable display, and miniature desserts. Get creative with the refreshments to make the day special for the bride.

Tip of the Day – Bridal Shower Question

Jenna’s Question: My sister wants to throw me a bridal shower, but I’ve read that family members aren’t supposed to throw showers. Can she still host the shower?

April’s Answer: Yes! Tell your sister to get started on the plans. It’s an old school rule that family members can’t throw bridal showers, because the purpose used to be to get gifts. Now, family members host showers all the time – it’s no longer a big deal. I hope you have a great time!

Tip of the Day – Bridal Shower Outfit

Brittany’s Question: I don’t know how this happened. My bridal shower is in two weeks and I don’t have an outfit!!! My friend is a professional photographer, and she’s going to take lots of pictures so I need to look cute. I’m 5’5” with blonde hair and blue eyes. I love the outfits on your blog and would really really really appreciate it if you would make one for me. My budget is $150 and I would really like to have a handbag included in the outfit. Thanks for your help!

April’s Answer: I’ve got the perfect outfit for you – you’re going to look great in the pictures. And it’s under your budget.

15 Tips for Planning a Bridal Shower

1. The maid of honor is the person who is responsible for hosting the bridal shower. However, the maid of honor should get help from the other bridesmaids, the mother of the bride, and the bride’s sisters. Put together a team to plan the shower and it will come together much easier.

2. The shower should take place one to two months before the wedding.

3. Assign tasks such as printing and sending invitations, décor, and coordinating the menu to each person on the planning team.

4. Plan the budget early on. Bridal showers don’t have to cost a lot of money. Talk to each person on the planning team to see how much each person can contribute.

5. If a lot of the guests don’t know each other, plan one or two ice breaker games to play at the beginning.

6. Don’t play more than 3 games. Guests will get tired of them.

7. Ensure that all guests will have a place to sit.

8. Decide on a theme for the bridal shower and the other items such as the décor and menus will fall into place.

9. Pick a space that fits the theme and budget. You can get creative and have the shower in a park, on the beach, in a bakery, in someone’s backyard, at a spa, or in the bride’s favorite restaurant.

10. Don’t invite people who aren’t invited to the wedding.

11. Decide early on if the shower is going to be surprise and make sure everyone planning the shower knows if it is a surprise, so they don’t spoil it.

12. Include the couple’s registry information on the shower invitation.

13. Have the guests RSVP to someone – like one of the bridesmaids.

14. Make sure someone is appointed to keep track of all of the gifts and who they’re from while the bride opens them, so she can write thank you notes.

15. Because the maid of honor and bridesmaids are paying for the wedding shower, they could consider all chipping in to buy the bride a gift together. It is necessary to still buy the bride a gift, even if you’re hosting the shower.

Bridal Shower Theme: Pajama Party

Remember when you were ten years old and couldn’t wait until your friend’s pajama party? Translate this idea into a bridal shower to have a fun, energizing theme. Send all of the invitees an invitation requesting them to wear their favorite pair of pajamas to the bridal shower. To keep the guests entertained, grab a movie with a wedding theme and a couple board games. If you’re going to watch a movie, you definitely need popcorn, so check out the recipe to make these popcorn balls. Every bridal shower needs a custom cocktail, and this pink martini is adorable and yummy.
