Real Wedding in Less than 3 Months – Heather and Seth

Whenever I receive an email containing wedding pictures, I tend to skip straight to the pictures and read whatever text the person sent with it last. When I downloaded the pictures, I devoured them and was completely impressed by the simple, romantic details. I went back to read what the talented photographer, Annie McElwain, included in the email and my head started spinning when I read that this couple planned their wedding in less than 3 months. You heard me right….they planned their wedding in 10 weeks.

If you’re thinking the same thing that I thought at first – why the heck would anyone choose to plan a wedding in less than 3 months unless they absolutely had to – then you have to read the story that Lauren from Downey Street Events wrote up about the wedding. It tugged at my heartstrings and it made me instantly feel like I could be friends with this adorable couple. I hope you enjoy today’s feature – I certainly did.

The following is from Lauren Geissler:

Not everyone can successfully – not to mention gracefully – plan a wedding in under three months.  The ability to pull off a wedding for 130 guests and full of great details is part of what makes Heather and Seth a dream to work with.

Heather and Seth are one of those couples who are always relaxed, take things in stride, and make everyone around them feel happy and peaceful, even in the midst of what can be wedding-planning chaos.  They are truly happy people who always have huge grins on their faces.  Although they had been engaged for years, they never thought much about setting a date until June of 2009.  Happy just to be together and starting their lives in Northern California, in Heather’s words she was ”a girl who never wanted a wedding.”  As for many brides, the idea of a big wedding was stressful, so Heather and Seth put it off – why worry when life was so good as it was?

That is until one night, at the urging of family and friends, they finally agreed that it was about time, and boldly set their date – just ten weeks away.  With Heather not being the type of bride who has dreamed of her wedding since she was a little girl, and with Seth in agreement, the couple decided that their wedding should happen sooner rather than later, and started spreading the word about their big day.

Needless to say the 10 weeks went by pretty fast, but you would never know it as a guest at the wedding. Heather made some brilliant sanity-saving decisions early on in the process.  First, she hired San Francisco based wedding planner Lauren Geissler, co-owner of Downey Street Events to help her plan, design and execute the wedding.  Next, she chose a Friday rather than a Saturday, which meant many of her first choice vendors and locations were not booked (and were more affordable). Heather and Seth also had a clear vision of their priorities, which made it easier to pin down vendors and accomplish important tasks.  But more than anything, Heather’s relaxed, happy attitude was what made their planning so successful.  Even when a venue fiasco forced them to change location six weeks before the wedding (and after the invitations had gone out) Heather handled it with humor and grace, always keeping in perspective that the wedding was just a party and, more importantly, the day she would marry the love of her life.

You can see by the pictures how consumed Heather and Seth were by each other on their wedding day.  And because the wedding planning process was so fast, Heather and Seth’s wedding had a sense of purity to it — it really showed off their personalities and what mattered most to them without any filler. Seth is a former chef, and comes from a family of chefs, and so food and drink were their top priorities.  The couple hired Barbara Llewellyn to cater their reception at the gorgeous Piedmont Community Center, in a park filled with sky-touching redwoods.  They served wine from the Cosentino winery, which they found at an incredible price through a family member who lives in Napa.  In the spirit of summer they offered their gusts a frosty watermelon martini which matched the teal, pink, and brown color scheme.  Because Heather and Seth love the outdoors and wanted to share that with their guests, they asked Downey Street Events to create handmade envelopes filled with wildflower seeds and sealed with a letterpressed “S” monogram.

Being a part of Heather and Seth’s wedding was such a wonderful reminder that all you need in life is your partner, a great group of family and friends to support you, and to take the time to enjoy the moment.

Pretty unbelievable, right? I have to give a huge thanks to the couple, Heather and Seth, for sharing their special day with us, to Lauren Geissler for sharing their story, and to the exceptionally talented Annie McElwain for the gorgeous photographs. Seriously, I could look through her blog all day – that’s how good her photography is – you need to check it out. You can also get a lot of inspiration from Downey Street Events – I did. And if you’re a San Francisco or Los Angeles bride, these are two vendors that you MUST consider – you’d be a fool not to.

My Halloween Wedding, Part III

We used mini pumpkins and gourds as the escort cards for our guests. It was one of their wedding favors.

wedding4.jpg

We encouraged guests to sign our “guest bench” which was a DIY project that my parents helped me with. This large piece of wood is now a bench on our porch!

wedding12.jpg

We danced to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight” for our first dance.

wedding11.jpg

After the first dance, we enjoyed passed appetizers and dinner. My favorite food was the mini grilled cheese sandwiches with shot glasses of tomato soup – they were so cute and really great comfort food for an autumn night.

wedding6.jpg

The centerpieces and table numbers were two more DIY projects. We found the wrought iron pumpkins two years before our wedding and I knew I had to have them. We placed them on DIY cake stands made from trees, surrounded them with moss, twigs with pearl beads and candles.

wedding7.jpg

wedding8.jpg

Since we’re both huge Va Tech football fans and planned our wedding around a football game {we took the bridal party to the Thursday night home game the week of our wedding}, my husband’s mom surprised us by getting the Hokie bird – the team’s mascot – to come to the reception. He took pictures with guests, danced with us and of course we all did the Hokey Pokey!

wedding9.jpg

wedding10.jpg

Instead of a wedding cake {I know, I’m nontraditional}, we had a DIY dessert bar with homemade cupcakes, banana nut mini loaves and cakes and candy. Since it was halloween, we decided to incorporate the holiday into our dessert bar. It was the only thing halloweenish at our wedding. We made the cake stands from trees and made the “tree” in the back with a clay pot and branches.

wedding1.jpg

wedding2.jpg

We had so much fun. I ate, drank and danced all night. It was seriously the best night of my life!

wedding13.jpg

Photography by David Franusich {thank you, thank you, thank you}

And if you couldn’t keep up – that was a total of 12 DIY projects! I consider my wedding pretty much a DIY wedding and I’m really proud of it, because we were able to stay in budget. Now that my wedding is over, I’m going to get busy doing even more DIY projects to post on Stylish Events….

Here is the War Memorial Chapel at Virginia Tech where our ceremony took place. It was an intimate location to get married, because it’s a small chapel. It was perfect for our 80 guests.

wedding1.jpg

On the outside of the chapel we hung two wood wreaths adorned with roses on the doors. Another DIY project.

wedding2.jpg

I spent hours making these pearl wreaths to hang on the ends of the pews. It was completely worth it, because it was one of my favorite decorations.

wedding3.jpg

My husband and I are lucky, because we have tons of crafty family members. My stepfather who is a carpenter and my mother built the wooden structure that we got married under. We’re not Jewish, but I fell in love with the idea of having a chuppah like structure. Now it’s in our backyard! We placed pastel colored pumpkins around the bottom of the structure and decorated it with gold leaves and branches.

wedding4.jpg

wedding5.jpg

wedding8.jpg

wedding10.jpg

At the end of the ceremony, we walked back down the aisle to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder. The guest were dancing and cheering and it was a great way to start the celebration.

wedding7.jpg

At the end of the ceremony, there were fireworks!

wedding11.jpg

wedding12.jpg

We rented a bus to take the guests from the ceremony to the reception. After we took pictures at the chapel, we rode over to the reception in the bus with the wedding party and then posed for a couple quick pictures.

Next up…..the reception!

This first set of pictures are all pre-ceremony pictures.

This first picture is my beautiful wedding dress. If you haven’t been following my blog for the past few months, you’re probably not aware that I got my dress at The Bridal Garden which is a nonprofit in New York City that sells new and gently used dresses at a fraction of the cost.

Here is my handsome groom arriving at the ceremony site {The War Memorial Chapel at Virginia Tech} followed by a picture with two of his groomsmen prior to the ceremony.

wedding7.jpg

wedding8.jpg

These are our DIY ceremony programs which I had to make two days before our wedding {my gracious bridesmaids were putting them together the day of the wedding}. I was hospitalized for five days the week of our wedding, and the programs were something I had planned to do during that time.

wedding1.jpg

For some reason I had it in my head that I wanted to wear red heels. But I didn’t want just any pair of red heels – I wanted the perfect pair of red heels. My mom and I spent about eight hours hunting for these pumps in August, but we had so much fun together shopping all day!

wedding13.jpg

Another DIY project – the bouquets and boutonnieres. I absolutely loved how they turned out.

wedding2.jpg

wedding5.jpg

wedding6.jpg

We got our wedding rings when we were on our honeymoon {I know it’s a little backwards – we took our honeymoon before our wedding} at a HUGE sale.

wedding12.jpg

In the next few pictures I’m getting ready and anticipating walking down the aisle. It took three hair trials to pick the style that I ended up choosing. One of my bridesmaids gave me the floral hair piece. She got it on a trip for less than 10 dollars!

wedding9.jpg

wedding10.jpg

Again, I have to thank our extremely talented photographer, David Franusich. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Make sure you stop back by tomorrow for the ceremony and reception pictures…..

Hugh answered a few of my questions, so we could get to know him better (thanks!):

When did you shoot your first wedding? I shot my first wedding in March 2008. I  had sort of stumbled my way into assisting for a few photographers during the previous summer, and found myself thinking, “Hey, I think I can do this…” All went well on that first wedding, but it was a bit of a shocker for me, none the less. It was just a little different than the usual cruising as an assistant that I was used to :)

How many weddings do you shoot a year? Well, I really only have 1 year under my belt, so my average might not be all that telling… but I shot 18 last year. My goal is to shoot about 30 next year. I’m aiming to keep the volume at a manageable level, while pushing the envelope on quality and creativity for the clients that I do take on.

What does a typical package include and cost? I don’t really rock set “packages” as they never seem to hit the mark with any given client. Full commissions start at $3,500 and include up to 8 hours of coverage along with all the color-corrected image files. Custom offering are, of course, available to each unique client from there.

Can you tell me about one of your favorite wedding locations to shoot? That’s a tough question. I might have to say that I haven’t shot at my favorite location yet. I’ve shot at some really cool places, but I’m most excited for a wedding when the location is new to me. That said, I had a really good time shooting at the Darlington House in La Jolla a few weeks ago, and I think there’s a lot more to take advantage of photographically next time I find myself there.

I want to give a huge thanks to Lacey and Brando for sharing their fabulous wedding and to Hugh Forte Photography for the stunning photography. Check out his website and blog for more wedding photography inspiration.

Em answered a few questions, so we could get to know her better:

When did you shoot your first wedding?

I shot my first wedding back in 2000.  Wow, where does the time go?!  For four years I assisted other photographers (commercial and wedding), and shot some smaller weddings by myself.  After a move in 2005, I started my very own business, M photography.  In 2008 I shot my 100th wedding!

How many weddings to do you shoot a year?

I shoot about 25 weddings a year.

What does a typical package include and cost?

My most popular package includes 7 hours of coverage, unlimited photographs taken, two photographers, online proof gallery for viewing, sharing, and ordering, all digital photos provided on a high resolution C.D., and $1200 album credit to use towards a custom designed album of your choice for a total package price of $3000.  Additional hours, albums, and other products can be added to any package. My basic package starts at $2000.

Can you tell me about one of your favorite wedding locations to shoot?

My home base is in Central Wisconsin and typically you will find me shooting there or in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.  I do however love the challenge of shooting in a new locations and weather conditions.  Coming up with unique and new spots to take portraits is the best part of my job and it helps keep the creative juices flowing!  Within the last two years I have been fortunate enough to shoot in many different locations around the U.S. and a handful of international locations across the world.  Some of my favorite wedding locations have been in Chicago, Oregon, Alaska, Colorado, Detroit, Hawaii, New York, Cabo Mexico, Punta Cana Dominican Republic, and London England.  This has really helped me to stay on my toes to keep creating art no matter where I am shooting or what the weather has in store for us while we are there.

Thanks to Scott and Rebecca for sharing their special day with us and to M Photography for sharing the beautiful pictures! Check out her website and blog for more wedding photos and inspiration.
